Plate Load Testing

Determination of vertical settlement and bearing characteristics of soil at foundation level.

The plate load test applies increasing load to a rigid plate at foundation level and records settlement at each increment. The resulting pressure-settlement curve gives the safe bearing capacity and the modulus of subgrade reaction used in foundation design.

Tests are carried out in an excavated pit at the proposed founding level, with reaction supplied by kentledge or anchored trusses depending on site access.
